HEDGEHOG WITH HECHTIA

HEDGEHOG-TYPE CACTUS and HECHTIA

This hedgehog cactus is growing between layers of limestone rock in the Chihuahuan Desert (Big Bend National Park, Texas). Alongside it is the drought-tolerant plant Hechtia texensis. This plant resembles lechuguilla - and its common name is false agave - but it has reddish leaves with spines along their edges (which can just be seen on the lower right-hand leaf). In fact it is a member of the pineapple family.
