Working in Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh is a fantastic place to work with a wide range of facilities and expertise, and Edinburgh is a great city to live in.

The Institute of Immunology and Infection Research

The Institute of Immunology and Infection Research (IIIR) offers a varied and dynamic scientific environment covering pure parasitology, immunity to parasites, allergy and autoimmunity, and fundamental immunology. We have a unique range of expertise in parasitic infection models including Litomosoides sigmodontis, Schistosoma mansoni, Brugia malayi, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Heligmosomoides polygyrus, Trypanosoma brucei, Plasmodium spp., and Leishmania spp., and there is a high level of interactions between groups. We are paired with the Institute of Evolutionary Biology providing a unique interdisciplinary environment, and as part of the Centre for Infectious Diseases maintain close links with infection researchers throughout Edinburgh.

In regard to facilities the IIIR provides ready access to a state-of-the-art flow cytometry suite. This suite contains a 13-colour Becton Dickinson LSR II flow cytometer with UV laser for analysis of DNA content and cell cycle, and a multi-colour Becton Dickinson FACSAria high-speed cell sorter. The IIIR also has an open access fluorescent microscope facility, and is in the process of obtaining a confocal microscope. Close by we have the Centre Optical Instrumentation Laboratory (COIL) which specialises in imaging and houses two confocal microscopes, one of which has 2-photon capability.
