Karine Coenen, dressed as Gregor Mendel to explain genetics as part of the Edinburgh Science Festival. Karine, a PhD student in the Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences, was involved in the BBSRC's interactive exhibit DNA in the Garden at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. Other hands-on activities, which attracted more than 500 members of the public, included extracting DNA from bananas and building DNA jigsaws.

Steve Smith will be moving in January to University of Western Australia where he has been awarded a 5-year Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship and Chair in Plant Genomics.  Although based in Perth, Steve will be a frequent visitor to IMPS, where he will maintain his current research group.

Catherine Kidner has moved to a lectureship in Evolution of Development held jointly in IMPS and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.  Catherine’s research focuses on the mechanisms underlying evolution of morphological diversity - particularly of leaves.

Richard Milne has taken up an NERC research fellowship and is now based in IMPS.  Richard, who moves from University of St Andrews, is an evolutionary biologist with wide research interests - from the role of hybridisation in speciation to the biogeography of species with trans-Atlantic distributions.

Karen Haliday will move to a senior lectureship in IMPS from December.  Karen has an established reputation in light signal transduction and will bring part of her research group from Bristol.

Andrew Miller has been appointed to the Chair of Systems Biology and will be based in IMPS from December.  Andrew’s research examines interactions between components of the circadian clock using a combination of molecular genetics and mathematical modelling.
